"Mr President, my country’s Parliament yesterday rejected the changes to the Eurobond, thereby expressing the desperate protests of its citizens about the absurdities emanating from Brussels. Our citizens have no problem with solidarity, or with helping friends in need. They do not understand, however, why their wages, which are the lowest in the euro area, should go towards protecting the EUR 6 million pay packet of the chair of
. They receive their modest pay only if their work enables their employer to generate the necessary profit. They are liable to their employer for any damages they cause from their own pockets.
I would therefore like to put a question to you, Commissioner: why is it that your friends from the troubled banks do not first pay from their own pockets for the damage caused to these institutions, and if that does not suffice, why is the difference not then paid by the insurance companies who covered the dubious investments? Our citizens also fail to understand your proposals because someone determined Slovakia’s contribution in such a way that a Slovak citizen must work about 300 hours to cover the guarantee, whilst a German or Belgian citizen would not have to work even half of that. We need to save the French, Belgian and German banks, but why do the citizens of my country have to work more for this?"@en1
