"In 2006, the European Union adopted Regulation (EC) No 1927/2006 establishing the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF), whose purpose is to provide help to workers who have lost their jobs owing to significant structural changes in world trade. The regulation became law in January 2007, benefiting tens of thousands of workers in almost all the Member States.
Globalisation threatens people’s livelihoods by taking work away to another place where labour is cheaper. We cannot forget that in the EU, there are 23 million unemployed and 123 million people living in difficult conditions. It is consequently vital that the EGF should continue into the new multiannual financial framework and, if possible, that the funds available should be increased. It would be just as important to broaden the terms of the fund to include young people, agricultural workers and the self-employed. I therefore welcome the adoption of this resolution, for which I voted, since I am aware that the fund will contribute towards fulfilling the objectives of the Europe 2020 strategy, thereby allowing the EU to emerge stronger and more cohesive from the economic and financial crisis in which it is mired, with its mind set on an intelligent, sustainable and inclusive programme of growth."@en1
