"In the decade which has elapsed since the last global summit on sustainable development, the international community has faced a number of huge challenges, from the food crisis and oil price fluctuations to natural disasters and the unprecedented economic crisis. The current pattern of consumption can obviously no longer continue.
Therefore, this meeting provides a necessary opportunity for identifying innovative solutions aimed at changing the current development paradigm. We need to find the way to provide a reasonable standard of living for a growing population, while halting ecosystem degradation and conserving the planet’s resources. In this respect, I think that consolidation of the institutional framework for sustainable development, in line with the UN resolution of 24 December 2009, is paramount. I hope that the European Union will be a successful driving force in obtaining a global consensus on this matter."@en1
