"Mr President, I attended this debate in its entirety yesterday afternoon but unfortunately, I did not get a chance to say a few words. It is a major issue, Rio+20, and the issues facing the world globally are probably more severe than ever: deforestation, desertification, overfishing, clean water supply and climate change. But they need to be tackled globally and it is no use that the European Union is playing its part, and probably disadvantaging itself, turning more people into poverty, while the rest of the world goes about its merry way.
Global problems need global solutions and I hope they will come from the next summit. As the Commissioner said yesterday, the policy of ‘growth first, clean-up later’ is no longer acceptable, not in the European Union and not globally."@en1
