"Mr President, I am a friend of Israel but I am a critical friend of Israel. I myself worked with the British Government on the Northern Ireland peace process and it is illusory to believe in a military solution; it has to be a political solution, and that involves negotiation. Legal settlements do not help that process. I do feel for the Palestinian people who have been very badly treated; I do believe that they need a state living in peace with Israel, side by side. However, I am not sure that this measure – which is a good negotiating tactic – of going straight to the UN to create a state is the right way forward, so I abstained on this vote. However, I do wish that the peace process moves forward. I think that is essential. But only painstaking negotiation, as we saw in the Northern Ireland peace process, can bring a political solution of benefit to everyone."@en1
