"Mr President, the Middle East peace process has progressed far too slowly, and that is why I supported the resolution. The Palestinians’ right to autonomy and right to their own state are incontestable, just as Israel, too, obviously has a right to an existence within secure borders. President Abbas’ sense of frustration is understandable: 20 years of peace negotiations is a long, long time. In international politics, however, timeliness is always of the essence. The ability of the EU to speak with one voice on foreign policy, however, seems once again to be hanging in the balance, which is unfortunate. I hope that the European Union and its Member States will find a common position with regard to the conflict in the Middle East and a peaceful solution to it. That is what is required of us. The only way to achieve lasting peace in the region is through proper political dialogue. The negotiating parties must therefore get round the table and talk. It is now time to cast a glance at what is going to happen after this UN process."@en1
