"Mr President, following the adoption of the written declaration on the establishment of a European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps, as provided for in the Treaty of Lisbon, I should like to extend my warmest thanks to my colleagues Hélène Flautre, Marion Harkin and Vittorio Prodi, who also signed the declaration, and to all the members who supported it. This is a happy occasion, as this initiative, which is supported by a majority in Parliament, coincides with the European Year of Volunteering. Importantly, it also coincides with the communication by the European Commission and Commissioner Georgieva and is the first policy document that has been tabled that is dedicated solely to volunteering. At this very difficult time for Europe to respond, the creation of such a voluntary corps speaks to the hearts and minds of European citizens and improves the image of the European Union. I should also like to thank my colleagues who believe in this idea and worked hard on this declaration."@en1
