"The world population is estimated to grow to 9 billion by 2050, increasing the pressure on the world’s limited natural resources. With the current style of economic development, environmental problems can only get worse.
On the other hand, I believe that the planet is by no means overpopulated, that there are adequate sources of energy and there can also be enough food for everyone on this planet to have a dignified life. The need for world solidarity in supporting sustainable consumption and production does, however, call for closer cooperation between the developed and emerging countries, with a clear schedule for fulfilling the political undertakings made.
For the processes and policies of the European Union, sustainable development needs to be a priority across the board. In conclusion I should like to say that I disagree with paragraph 46, which calls for all nuclear power stations to close and no new ones to be built. This would result in real energy problems."@en1
