"Millions of Europeans risk being pushed into deeper poverty because of the harsh and rigid stance of six Member States. At a time when increasing numbers of Europeans are feeling the effect of the banking crisis and are in need of food aid, these countries are turning off the tap. Not because they have no money, but because they think that this kind of social policy is better left to the exclusive competence of Member States. That is typical of a liberal vision of Europe that only has an economic, and rarely a social, dimension. They are still failing to understand the fact that a strong European social policy, which guarantees every Member State minimum rights, brings benefits to all. It is, therefore, no surprise that the obstructions to this are those countries which are pushing for a harsh austerity policy without addressing the social consequences. Neither is it a coincidence that precisely these countries are more and more openly calling European solidarity into question. One of the signals we have already received is the fact that these countries have been undermining, in a brutal and irresponsible fashion, the commendable work of many volunteers working for food banks, non-profit organisations and charities as part of the European Year of Volunteering. They would be better to follow the example of the selfless work of thousands of volunteers in order to build a better society and one with greater solidarity."@en1
