"In the European Union 79 million people live below the poverty line, and last year 18 million citizens received food provided by the scheme for ‘food distribution to the most deprived persons’. We are going through an economic crisis where there are visible signs of growing poverty, especially due to the pressure of the austerity measures being applied by some governments, and the number of people suffering from hunger is steadily rising. I feel it is unacceptable that, at a particularly difficult time like this, we are having discussions about cutting the budget allocated to this programme or about funding it from Member States’ budgets. Such decisions would be irresponsible. I think that this programme must be kept as one of our priorities, as a European scheme funded from the CAP budget, even if the food distributed is taken from the market and not from intervention stocks. I want to ask the Polish Presidency to exert pressure for this mechanism guaranteeing the most deprived groups access to food to be maintained. The right to food is a fundamental right and we must do everything we can to provide this right to our citizens."@en1
