"Following its amendment in 2010, the programme was extended to the foods that it covers, including fruit, vegetables and cooking oil. There was a reason for that. It was to improve the nutritional balance of the programme. Rightly so, because it would be hypocritical on our part to operate a programme which distributes free food purely and simply to offload stocks from the common agricultural policy, with no regard for the nutritional needs of our fellow citizens. The EU may have stopped dumping on the international markets but, if we operate the programme like that, it is equivalent to dumping food on destitute people in the EU."@en1
