"Mr President, six Member States hold the fate of 18 million needy Europeans in their hands. Those six Member States say that they are simply adhering to the letter of the law, nothing more, nothing less. Legalistic propriety is one thing, humanism and political choices are another. How can we not express our anger towards those who are deaf to the alarm bells rung by the associations that help the most deprived. Do we, Members of the European Parliament and representatives of all our citizens, want a Europe in which national self-interest establishes policies, with scant regard for the nationals of fiscally strapped Member States? There is no question of renationalising this aid. No. Let us maintain this programme, let us give it a stronger legal basis, but let us not abandon those who, right now, in 2012, are counting on this aid in particularly difficult times of crisis."@en1
