"Mr President, I too add my voice to those who have condemned in this Chamber the cynicism and selfishness displayed by the governments of the six Member States which have decided to oppose the European food aid programme. Last year, we marked the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. Unfortunately, it has turned out to be a rather symbolic action. Now, when we need to turn words into deeds, there are governments which are openly committing to a lack of solidarity with the European Union’s deprived citizens. This programme is one of the very few instruments which the European Union can use to intervene directly to support Europe’s citizens. At a time when there are more than 40 million people in need, I believe that it is immoral both to oppose this programme and to abandon the issue of funding the programme to red tape. This is why I call on the Commission to resolve the issue of providing funding from the agriculture budget and to continue providing food aid to the poorest citizens in the EU at the same level as up until now."@en1
