"Mr President, Commissioner, I am here to add my voice to those of all my fellow Members who, on 4 July 2011 and again today, unanimously supported you in your attempt to rid the EU of the shame that has befallen it, following the incomprehensible decision taken by a minority of five Member States in the Council.
It is absolutely unacceptable that a few Member States, which do not even participate in this programme, are preventing Europe from moving forward in its solidarity and support. This is not support for those trying to combat poverty, because that is not the aim of this programme. Let us make no mistake: this programme is intended to fight against hunger.
There are 80 million poor people in Europe, but 13 million people rely on this programme for food. There is no legal or budgetary justification for blocking it, because if we ask Members of the European Parliament and our citizens, they will say that any area of the budget can be cut apart from this one.
Please keep up your work, Commissioner. Make the Council reverse its decision. The press and the citizens of Europe must be made aware that the Members of the European Parliament do not want this shame to befall us. I urge you to seek a solution based on solidarity; not one that means the poor looking after the poor but, rather, the well-off looking after the poor.
Whatever happens, this programme must continue; both provisionally and definitively we must end the disgrace of this Europe of affluence and waste where people still go hungry."@en1
