"Mr President, Commissioner, President-in-Office of the Council, ladies and gentlemen, Europe is not simply an economic and monetary union. Our citizens expect other things, especially at a time of economic and social crisis. No one can understand that simple legal reasons are depriving 18 million people of the power to feed themselves. This is a vital right, which our conventions recognise.
Consequently, what the Commissioner said just now is to be welcomed, and we ask all our fellow Members to impress upon their respective governments the need for the Council to adopt a dignified position. The only position that can be adopted here, especially in view of the fact that Community funds are in place, is to enable food aid, to which our citizens must have access in decent and dignified conditions, to be continued. It is a question of dignity; it is a question of solidarity."@en1
