"Mr President, we see it with the euro crisis, we see it with the scheme for food distribution to the most deprived persons in the Union: national self-interests are, sadly, back. The Member States are clinging tenaciously to them, and the principle of solidarity, which founded and inspired the creation of Europe, is being eroded day by day. This is not acceptable, especially when it affects the poorest, those who face the greatest hardships, and those who badly need to obtain food aid from charities. They now number more than 13 million in Europe, and Europe cannot and must not turn its back on them. Commissioner, you have made the point very effectively in everything you have said and written: ‘The European Union must not fail’. The Member States must therefore unblock their unacceptable deadlock. What is at stake, first and foremost, is the dignity of the poorest and most vulnerable, especially at a time when the crisis is engulfing our continent. What is also at stake, however, is the dignity of our European institutions. In this struggle – and I am saying this to the Commission and to the Presidency of the Council – you should know that we are at your side and that all of us who are gathered here are fully engaged in this struggle."@en1
