"Mr President, needy citizens do not want sympathy or cynicism. They want their rights as citizens to be turned into reality. Yesterday in this Chamber we discussed the human right to food security in developing countries and today we are dealing with the fact that some governments, including those of Germany, Denmark, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, are deliberately curtailing this right by refusing to continue with the ‘Food for Free’ programme. A total of 43 million people in the European Union are affected by food poverty, which means that they cannot afford a proper, balanced meal every second day. As many as 19 million people rely on the ‘Food for Free’ programme.
In 2010, the motto in Germany of the European year for combating poverty and social exclusion was ‘With new courage’. Anyone who treats poor people simply as statistics should have more courage themselves and ensure that sufficient, proper food is available for people in all regions of the European Union, on the basis of solidarity."@en1
