". − Because human rights form the foundation of and lie at the heart of the work of the European Parliament and because we strongly oppose any discrimination against people, we are particularly sensitive to these matters being misused for ideological purposes. This is the reason why my colleagues from the Christian Social Union (CSU), many other Christian Democrats and I myself have voted against this motion for a resolution and against most of the amendments submitted by the groups on the left and the Greens. We base our approach on the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, together with the constitutions of the Member States and Christian values. Marriage is and will remain a permanent relationship between a man and a woman, who, together with their children, form a family. The Charter of Fundamental Rights explicitly states that the definition of marriage and the family remains a matter for the Member States. For this reason, subjects such as same-sex partnerships do not belong in a resolution on human rights and neither does treating them as the equivalent of marriage, which is completely unacceptable."@en1
