"I voted in favour of the resolution on sexual orientation and gender identity at the United Nations Human Rights Council. There needs to be greater public awareness of human rights violations on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity. Even in the 21
century, this type of violation happens on a daily basis. This is the case all over the world, including in Europe. Discrimination is pervasive in our societies, whether in an open or implied manner.
The Commission and the Member States should continue to fight against discrimination both within and outside EU borders. We should keep up with the times. When I see that confusion over gender identity is categorised as a disorder in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), it is a sad reminder that we continue to close our eyes, perhaps out of hypocrisy, to a social reality that is nevertheless part of the furniture."@en1
