"I must categorically express my concern at the many cases of human rights violations and the spread of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the European Union as well as in third countries. The EU aims to ensure that international standards on human rights are fully upheld regardless of the sexual orientation or gender identity of the individual. The EU Member States have long supported the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity among the Human Rights Council’s activities on human rights and in other bodies of the UN. The rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals, including the right to bodily integrity, the right to privacy and family life, the right to freedom of opinion and expression, the right of free assembly, the right to non-discrimination, the right of free movement and the right to asylum are not yet always fully observed in the European Union. The Member States and the Commission must put all their efforts into tackling this inequality. The Commission should draft a comprehensive plan to tackle homophobia, transphobia and discrimination based on sexual discrimination and gender identity."@en1
