"The vote on this motion for a resolution is particularly important for the defence of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people who are still too often subject to discrimination, and even violence, within the European Union. In that regard, we should welcome the work of the United Nations which seeks to promote the rights of transgender people and the recognition of gender identity.
Contrary to what several members of the
party would have us believe in France, following their recent call for the French Government to withdraw school textbooks explaining the impact of socio-cultural context on gender identity, we should stress the fact that gender identity is not merely a biological given.
Finally, we should also urge that gender and sexual orientation should be fully taken into account in the processing of asylum applications, so that the vulnerability of these individuals can be identified at the earliest possible opportunity and the appropriate procedures followed."@en1
