"Article 1 of the UN Universal Declaration on Human Rights reads ‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood’. On 17 June 2011, the UN Human Rights Council reaffirmed the universality of this Declaration by adopting a first resolution on ‘Human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity’. This resolution is a significant step for safeguarding the rights of the LGBT community, for it acknowledges human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity; it calls for better protection of the rights of this community, and it recognises the legitimacy of human rights defenders working on these issues. While I welcome this positive development in the UN, I remain alert to the ongoing human rights violations, based on sexual orientation and gender identity, which still take place in many countries around the world. The fact that 21 EU members co-sponsored this resolution sends a powerful message to our citizens, our colleagues and partners overseas. It demonstrates the EU’s commitment to human rights, freedom of expression and freedom of choice. These rights, ultimately, are the core values of the EU."@en1
