"In 1947, the United Nations (UN) established the ‘two states’ principle for the territory of the former Palestine. The State of Israel was established and recognised as a member of the UN. The Palestinian people have been waiting 64 years for the realisation of their legitimate and inalienable right to independent statehood. This principle has been reaffirmed in several UN resolutions over the years. The request made to the UN General Assembly by the President of the Palestinian National Authority for the recognition of the State of Palestine, sovereign and viable, with its pre-1967 borders, including East Jerusalem, as a full member of the UN, is the logical conclusion of all those resolutions and principles in the UN Charter. However, the reality in the territory is the consolidation and advancement of Israeli occupation, supported by successive US administrations, with the connivance of the EU. In doing so, it submits the Palestinian people to various forms of violence and oppression. At a time when justice, clarity and unconditional support for the inalienable right of the Palestinian people are being called for, this resolution is ambiguous, as it shields the continued imposition of constraints that favour the continuance of the situation that has existed here for decades. We therefore did not vote in favour."@en1
