"I wish to express my satisfaction, because the steps taken recently in the United Nations and other international organisations, and the step we have taken today by adopting this resolution, are helping to establish sexual orientation and gender identity as a specific human right.
We are helping to reduce the violations that still happen today in many countries, such as the criminalisation of homosexuality, discrimination at every level, and persecution of those who are different.
The economic crisis and the problems we are having in making a strong response to it constitute a threat to the European model. Nevertheless, we all know what we need. Europe is useful for the economy and our citizens’ well-being, but also for improving and protecting their rights, both in Europe and around the world.
Today’s motion for a resolution on sexual orientation is a fine example of that, and proof that, on a daily basis, Europe brings freedom and human values to a world that will only be able to emerge from the crisis if it calls on those principles."@en1
