". − I have voted against the Wortmann-Kool (), Goulard (), Feio () and Ford () reports, because they do not represent a balanced package for the management of economic policy. Austerity measures which do not safeguard investments and which suppress demand will result in growth being blocked and jobs being lost. They will make economic recovery impossible and this is the requirement for a return to a balanced budget. The package is unbalanced from a social perspective. It gives in to pressure from the financial markets and leaves the citizens to bear the costs of the crisis. There is a lack of democratic control over the most important decisions made on economic policy. During months of negotiations, our group struggled to achieve a compromise, but the Conservative majority in the Council and in Parliament refused to budge an inch from its inflexible austerity policy, even when it became ever clearer that this approach was constantly pushing Europe further towards a double-dip recession. The Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament has highlighted a clear alternative which is described in detail in the paper entitled ‘A fair way out of the crisis’ (http://www.socialistsanddemocrats.eu/gpes/media3/documents/3574_DE_fair_way_out_crisis_de_100908.pdf )."@en1
