On 29 September 2010, the Commission tabled a legislative package aimed at reinforcing economic governance in the EU and the euro area. The package is made up of six proposals: four of them deal with budgetary issues, including a reform of the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP), while two new regulations aim at detecting and addressing emerging macroeconomic imbalances within the EU and the euro area. This draft opinion is on the proposal, tabled by the Commission, for a Council regulation amending Regulation (EC) No 1466/97 on the ‘strengthening of the surveillance of budgetary positions and the surveillance and coordination of economic policies’. It is generally agreed that the SGP has failed in terms of both prevention and correction, and needs to be reformed. I agree with the amendments to the proposal initially tabled by the Commission, which were adopted in Parliament by a broad majority. I would argue that it is important to take the experience acquired during the years when the old SGP existed into account, along with the fact that economic governance has become more democratic through Parliament’s involvement throughout the surveillance process. I therefore voted for this report."@en1
