"I abstained from voting on this report. Indeed, it sets out sanctions for Member States in the event of macroeconomic imbalances, but it does not provide, nor does the legislative package of which it is part, the structures of economic governance that Europe so desperately needs. At a time when the crisis is hitting the people of Europe hard, the European Parliament cannot send out the austerity message, a message that would be incomprehensible and inexplicable to our fellow citizens, and detrimental to the European project. Furthermore, this report is not ambitious enough. Of course, we must tighten our belts to avoid public deficit, but not to the detriment of social justice and future investment, since these are needed if we are to build a sustainable economy. In other words, we need more Europe if we are to face up to the crisis: a closer fiscal, social and political union and a European budget with own resources."@en1
