"Today’s vote came two weeks after certain Member States, led by France, had given up asking for the Commission’s recommendations to be approved by the Council. We MEPs were afraid that such a measure would have encouraged governments to do deals behind closed doors. Instead, the agreement adopted will oblige the eurozone countries to reach a majority in order to reject the Commission’s warnings, which will otherwise be directly applicable. Thus the eurozone States will no longer be able to ignore the Commission’s warnings on budgetary policies. Furthermore, the economic governance legislation should push national governments to correct problematic economic situations more quickly, ensure greater transparency and democracy in decision-making and improve the quality and reliability of statistics."@en1
