"This text orchestrates the Commission’s control over all aspects of national budgets within the framework of the European Semester. It distinguishes between the ‘good students’, that is, those countries that keep their budgetary deficit under 2% of GDP, and the ‘bad students’, that is, those who do not.
Sanctions will be applied. Those Member States which reform their pension system will be exempted. Enhanced austerity plans will be imposed on countries whose debt is more than 60% of GDP or whose debt is exposed to more risk than other countries. Meagre positive point: the stability and convergence plans must mention whether or not national parliaments have been able to debate them. I am voting against this text and I condemn its unacceptable aggression against the nations’ popular sovereignty."@en1
