The current economic, financial and social crisis has demonstrated that the economic governance model in force in the European Union has not worked: the surveillance framework has shown itself to be very weak and the rules of the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) have not been respected.
I therefore agree with the package of measures that the Commission has tabled on economic governance, which should have a key role in preventing future crises, and in strengthening European competitiveness and economic growth. I am voting for Ms Wortmann-Kool’s report on strengthening budgetary surveillance and the coordination of economic policies. I agree with the inclusion of reversed majority voting throughout the package, and in particular in the preventive part of the SGP. This reinforces the role of the Commission by requiring a qualified majority in the Council in order to reject the Commission’s decision.
I think the ‘economic dialogue’ provided for here, which ensures greater transparency and accountability, is very important, as is the clear and necessary link with the European Semester. I welcome the strengthening of the SGP rules, as they allow for greater surveillance in order to prevent, at an early stage, budget deficits and also excessive debts, with a view to sustainable growth."@en1
