"Mr President, we are well aware that a big storm is raging all over the world and in Europe. That is a financial storm, a storm of lost confidence. The reason why the financial markets have lost confidence in our Member States is that they do not believe that our Member States will be able to repay the money that they already owe. Today’s legislative package, that is, the legislative package on financial surveillance that we have jointly developed and adopted, is a very important step towards weathering this storm, towards restoring the financial markets’ confidence in our national economies and our governments, which ultimately means the well-being of our people. However, ladies and gentlemen, I call on you to remember that this legislation will solve and prevent the problems of the future. We still have much to do today and I believe that it is now the Commission’s turn to develop clearer proposals for eliminating today’s problems, and not only those of the future. Thank you for your attention."@en1
