"There is probably no one who doubts that the European Union currently finds itself in a profound crisis. What is more, this crisis concerns not only the economic situation, which is where its impact has been most noticeable, but it is also a crisis of politics, of society and of identity. We are currently focussing on rescuing the single currency and trying to hammer out a support plan for Greece and other Member States in danger of bankruptcy. However, we should first of all be asking ourselves the question as to what the Union should be like – a Union which will very soon number 28 Member States. While concentrating on economic reforms, we must not forget that our Union is of a much broader nature and that we are not just a community based on economic and monetary union. I think the budgetary crisis in some countries of the euro area has obscured other threats from our view. Have we noticed the rising wave of xenophobia in our societies? Have we registered that our economy is increasingly being penetrated by China, and that Beijing is setting individual Member States against each other? Do we have a strategy in relation to what is happening at the moment in North Africa? Have we noticed that the United States is now ceasing to be a dependable and stable ally? Do we have answers to these questions today – do we have a strategy which we can follow?"@en1
