"In recent times we have been subjected to a deluge of catastrophic reports about the situation in the Eurozone, the EU and European integration as a whole. That the situation is critical I agree. On the other hand, a bit of historical perspective would not be out of place. The EU is still a successful project, which during its short time in existence has succeeded in uniting European nations and become a leading world force. Even if individual steps taken in its history can be criticised, I personally see the EU project so far as a huge success for multilateralism and international cooperation. At the same time I should like to add that I have my doubts on some of the scenarios that are presented here on a daily basis regarding the situation in the eurozone. I am particularly ashamed by the fact that at this very moment it is the Slovak government that is putting the brakes on measures to prevent the crisis from breaking out in its imminent next stage. That is why I would like to appeal to absolutely everyone involved in today’s debate to put aside their party colours and national interests, stop their short-term political point-scoring, and treat the EU as a single entity in the context of its history. The EU is still in good working order, even if the outlook is unclear. It all depends on our resolve, and I believe firmly that when the state of the Union is evaluated in the near future, we will not have to find that it has deteriorated or completely disintegrated. Let us avoid making a historical mistake."@en1
