"Mr President, Europe is in a debt crisis, although, in fact, there is of course money in Europe. The issue is mainly about a crisis of confidence – a crisis of credibility. Commission President, you proposed amending the Treaties. This crisis will not be resolved with new treaties, but through compliance with existing ones – existing commitments. The Member States have to bring their economies into balance and cut debt.
I fear that you, Commission President, will be leading the EU out of an economic crisis into a treaty crisis. The EU cannot afford new crises now: this has to be dealt with in a controlled manner, in compliance with the Treaties. I do not support Eurobonds either. They will only lead to new crises by allowing Member States to continue borrowing irresponsibly, both now and in the future."@en1
