"Mr President, I should like to begin by congratulating you on your strong speech, Dr Barroso, and on the message of determination that you have brought before us, for which you received deserved applause.
You spoke of a Europe of citizens. Now the citizens are asking, how we have managed to reach this crisis, and so many sacrifices, when Europe has 7% of the world’s population and 22% of its gross domestic product.
However, the big question is this: what is our escape route? You know, Dr Barroso, that the citizens are sick of words: what they want is action. One of the actions that should already have been taken is putting a stop to tax havens. During the French presidential elections, President Sarkozy talked about putting a stop to tax havens, but nothing has been done as yet.
In addition, we also need to move ahead with fiscal harmonisation, because no single currency can survive without fiscal harmonisation. I believe it is important to stress this, and that austerity and responsibility should be in harmony with solidarity."@en1
