"Mr President, Mr Barroso, you have spoken today of a renaissance and I am joining Mr Leinen in referring to this. Renaissance means rebirth. If we are to give birth to something again, we should be aware of what sort of environment the new project is being born into. We only have complete agreement about the European project in one area and that is the European peace project. The policymaking which is currently going on will put this project and this trust at risk. Today we have frequently heard the criticism that the flame of Europe is obviously only really burning in this Chamber and that a great deal of child abandonment is taking place, when we look at the Council and the individual Member States. This means that it will be our joint task – the Members of Parliament, your task as President and, most importantly, the task of the Council Presidency – to help to ensure that this renaissance takes place in an environment where we have the trust of the people. We will not have this trust if we take the European Union not only in the direction of being an economic and monetary union, but also in the direction of a social union. I believe that this is also missing in the ‘six pack’. It provides no guarantee that the economy will be sustainable or that there will be opportunities for the future. We will only have a future in Europe, if the people come with us into the future."@en1
