"Mr President, in spite of the huge effort the Council, the Commission and the European Parliament have invested in stabilising the Europeam monetary system, we cannot say that this has been a great success. I do not think that calling each other names and trying to pin the blame for the bad situation on the Council or national governments is particularly fair.
Surely you realise that you are asking the new Member States to take on additional obligations in the name of their citizens to stabilise the insolvent countries in a situation where, for example, the average income in Slovakia is under EUR 400, even though this is almost one-quarter of the average wage in troubled Greece, while the average salary is about EUR 800, which is also several times lower than in the countries that are expecting to be bailed out.
If you are such a gentleman, Mr President, please try to stand up before Slovakia’s citizens and tell them that they have to save even more and get even more deeply into debt only to maintain the much higher incomes in the wealthier, insolvent countries. I do not think that you can really appeal to people’s sense of solidarity in this case..."@en1
