"I would like to say to President Barroso that I appreciated his speech and that he is absolutely going in the right direction, but I would like us to agree that, in the last 18 months, the European institutions have not really been equal to the task of dealing with the crisis – that is my take, at least – and that they have not succeeded, to say the least, in stemming what is, in essence, a crisis of confidence, as well as this debt crisis and the crisis of the euro area. Today, the result is that our European Union is weakened. So, is a shake-up possible? You said that it is. Well, I wish you were right. There are several conditions for this: firstly, we need to press all the political players and all the European institutions to come together. Secondly, we need to reaffirm loud and clear the principles that have made Europe, namely solidarity and the community spirit. Thirdly, we need to say that a single country leaving the euro area is not a possibility. You said so and that is good. Fourthly, we need to put on the table a coherent comprehensive package. Mr Verhofstadt talked about this in detail, so I will not go over it again. Finally, we need to make progress towards real economic governance, but we will also have to move towards real political governance. Never have there been so many responsibilities."@en1
