"Mr President, Dr Barroso, I should naturally like to congratulate you on the additional hope that you have given to all us Members of the European Parliament and, in particular, to the citizens of the European Union whom we represent here. Having said that, I should also like to say that we are now expecting very, very determined action from the Commission alongside the Council, so that this sovereign debt crisis might be resolved in short order.
We know that it is a marathon, but immediate signals are necessary. Therefore, leaving aside the fact that we are all thinking already about amending the Treaties that are the political expression of the entire project that we have brought this far, leaving that aside, something needs to be done now. This package of measures and, perhaps, an agreement; an agreement between all the Member States, along the lines of what we have been calling a ‘shareholders’ agreement’ that goes beyond the Treaties and could put all these ideas into practice, starting now.
Many congratulations on your courage and your determination. I believe we are on the right track and will leave here today with new determination."@en1
