"Mr President, thank you. I would like to congratulate you, President Barroso, on the decisiveness with which you explained here the Community method needed to rescue our single currency. We will soon be taking a crucial vote on the ‘six pack’, which will see the European Commission set up as an independent authority. It has taken months to get the Council to come this far. However, this Parliament has stood firm. It is now crucial that we in this House come together and vote ‘yes’, because that will allow us to build on this achievement. We call on you to make sure you see through these ambitious proposals, because we are standing at a crossroads. We could decide today to build further on the Community method for economic governance in Europe and to reform it. The alternative is: chaos on the financial markets and Heads of State or Government having the final say. That too is an option, of course. We in this House will then have to do further work, together with all political groups, on the proposals you have presented today in order to strengthen future governance."@en1
