"Mr President, Mr Juncker, you mentioned the need to invest. I think that all of us in this Chamber want to invest in research and innovation. Unfortunately, however, it is usually public funds that we use. I would like to propose another sector in which to invest: I want to talk about energy. Investing in indigenous renewable energies. Investing in building restoration in Europe. Investing in the modernisation of networks in Europe. These investments could be made by private investors. Why not organise a summit meeting between the European Investment Bank, pension funds, the big European energy companies, private banks holding citizens’ savings, which are still in abundance in many countries, and where an investment programme is drawn up that achieves two things: creating added value in Europe and reducing our energy dependence, all on the basis of private investment. This would be one way of not relying too heavily on public funds for research and innovation."@en1
