"I voted in favour of the report by Mr Koch because I share the ambitious objective re-proposed by the Commission to halve the number of road accident victims in the EU by 2020.
To this end, I agree with the suggestions of Parliament, in other words, to support policies aiming to increase road safety, and achieve the long-term objective of ‘Vision Zero’. For this, the EU needs to be equipped with a body of more concrete road safety measures. In addition, I believe it would be useful to improve the indicators and data relating to road safety in order to harmonise data for comparison, particularly when analysing the cause of injuries and accidents.
However, the EU’s constant commitment must be acknowledged, as the figures show. The number of deaths in road accidents fell by 36% between 2001 and 2009, with 80 000 fewer victims. These are encouraging figures, even if the ambitious objective of halving the number of deaths in road accidents every year has not yet been met. From 2009 to date, there were still 35 000 deaths and 1.5 million injuries on Europe’s roads."@en1
