"I voted in favour of this report because, in the space of just a few decades, there has been a fivefold increase in the number of disasters worldwide – up to 400 disasters a year. Therefore, in order to prevent a high number of casualties, it is necessary to improve the European Union’s disaster response. The main disasters faced in the European Union’s Member States include major forest fires, drought, tidal waves and earthquakes, floods, nuclear accidents, terrorist attacks, natural disasters and pandemics. Over the past 20 years, these disasters have killed almost 90 000 people in Europe and affected tens of millions of others. Furthermore, the economic losses are estimated at EUR 211 billion. In future, these disasters may only increase as a consequence of climate change and the depletion of natural resources, and it is therefore necessary to take specific action as a matter of urgency. Improved actor coordination, a protection system, a 24 hour European emergency response centre and accurate information during a crisis are some of the main measures that might reduce the number of casualties in the future."@en1
