"There is no alternative to education if we want to offer the children of the world a better life and a more promising future. It is a moral and ethical imperative. Education is the basis of prosperity. There will be no economic, social or human progress without access to universal learning. The European Schools were created out of a concern to offer children who are not resident in their country of origin an education in their mother tongue. More than 50 years after the creation of the first European School, the added value of this project is well proven. Children leaving these institutions are not only multilingual; they are also open to other cultures and equipped to pursue studies in line with their aspirations in an increasingly interdependent and globalised world. Countries which do not provide teachers, who are essential for the proper functioning of these schools, should be aware that they are penalising the children of their citizens. Let us not forget that we live in the age of knowledge. The articulation between education, vocational training, the quality of education, research, innovation and the business world will be crucial in the coming years."@en1
