"Madam President, during the current part-session we are facing a very important vote on the six-pack, five regulations and one directive, which aim to strengthen economic governance in Europe in the light of the adverse experience of the economic crisis. This strengthening is to be achieved primarily by a fundamental reform of the Stability and Growth Pact, which has been found to be ineffective in preventing crises, as has been brutally exposed by the recent turmoil in the euro area.
After the initial green light given to the legislative package by the Ecofin Council at its meeting in Wrocław, the fate of the six-pack lies in Parliament’s hands. Only if it is adopted quickly will it be able to calm the recent instability in the financial markets and prevent another recession, something which is looking ever more likely. However, we cannot allow a similar situation to the one we had before our recess, when disputes within the Council prevented the rapid adoption of the package. New regulations providing for budgetary discipline in the Member States and strengthening of the EU’s economic stability are essential, given the constant economic troubles worldwide."@en1
