"Madam President, on Saturday 19-year-old Angel Petrov was deliberately knocked down by a car and killed on the spot. The man detained for his murder is an associate of the gypsy boss – and proven criminal – Kiril Rashkov. The following evening, an angry mob gathered outside Kiril Rashkov’s house and set it on fire.
These are some of the extremely ugly scenes which have occurred in my country. Kiril Rashkov was caught unawares by the arrival of democracy, while serving a 30-year sentence for a wide variety of crimes. At the moment, he is becoming a symbol representing two things: firstly, a symbol of vast wealth acquired illegally and, secondly, a symbol of special treatment due to his ethnic origin.
For 20 years Bulgarian governments, including the present administration, have made the judicial system and courts apply double standards. This escalates tension and creates Bulgarian citizens’ desire for justice. If this state of affairs does not change, I, for one, do not want the population to take justice into their own hands, but this is what will happen."@en1
