"Madam President, as the President mentioned at the opening of the sitting, Troy Davis was executed in the United States last Thursday. Just before his execution, he lifted his head from the trolley to which he was strapped and said to those listening: I am innocent! At the same time, he called for his case to be investigated further and for the truth to come out.
We have to say that murder is always abhorrent, even when it is committed by a state. What is even worse for us is when it happens in a country with which, traditionally, we have good relations. The European Parliament has repeatedly expressed its opposition to the death penalty. The President would therefore have my backing if he were to approach the US authorities on behalf of this House and, while making reference to this specific case, reiterate our opposition to the latest executions in the United States."@en1
