".
The Agreement under discussion will certainly help the development of the Palestinian economy through the duty-free import of Palestinian agricultural products onto the EU market and it will therefore also facilitate the export of Palestinian products to the EU. In this respect, it represents an important boost for the Palestinian economy, which is currently experiencing a crisis. The situation in the Palestinian Territories is a cause for concern – according to data provided by the World Bank – on account of the severe poverty and unemployment. However, a sound economic basis is a fundamental requirement for a viable Palestinian state and for peace in the Middle East. It is therefore also in the interests of Israel in particular to support this development. From this point of view, the construction of the separation wall in the West Bank represents a significant obstacle and must be abandoned immediately wherever the immediate security interests of Israel are not affected. The non-tariff barriers to trade established by Israel also represent a similar obstacle. In any case, I welcome the approach chosen in the report to insist on the exact designation of origin of the products."@en1
