"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, I would also like to congratulate Ms Matias on this report. Globally, Europe is the richest region, but the United States, Japan and the BRIC countries invest significantly more in innovation, research and development. Although the investment volume in Europe has increased, when it comes to achieving the objective of a total investment of 3% of GDP by 2020, only six Member States have so far achieved more than 2%. Knowledge is definitely a public good. Accordingly, the social aspects and impacts on society of research and innovation need to be taken into account. In this regard, particular attention must be paid to small and medium-sized enterprises. Support must be given in particular to female researchers in order to take gender equality into account."@en1
