"Madam President, Commissioner, firstly, I wish to congratulate the rapporteur for an excellent and important report. When speaking of research and development, we also always have to consider how we can create jobs and promote European competitiveness. To achieve this, we need to be able to make business and industry a more successfully integrated part of research policy. Furthermore, we must remember that, although it is very important that we invest in excellence in cutting-edge research, we must also invest in research that creates innovations rooted in practice. If we consider funding, we can support innovations rooted in practice which emerge at the customer interface, largely also via the Structural Funds. It is therefore important that, in the future and during the forthcoming financial period, we should be able to lower the barriers with regard to funding for Framework Programmes, as well as the Structural Funds."@en1
